Since the release of the landmark 1964 Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health more than 40 years ago, great strides have been made in tobacco control and treatment. The US Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence 2008 Update recommends that every clinician, health plan and health care institution make effective counseling and treatment strategies available to all smokers. Considerable progress has been made in tobacco research through the years. In addition to pharmacotherapy and counseling, there is increasing evidence that health care policies significantly affect the likelihood that smokers will receive effective tobacco dependence treatment. Coordinated interventions by clinicians, administrators, insurers, and purchasers can lead to a culture of heath care in which treatment of tobacco dependence is a standard of care.

Upon completion you will be able to:  Compare the prevalence of tobacco use at national, state, and county levels; Identify available resources of tobacco dependence treatment in New York State; Describe the physiological effects of nicotine on the brain; Discuss current pharmacological treatment of nicotine dependence as per 2008 Clinical Practice Guidelines; Recall motivational interventions to be used for the “hard core” recalcitrant smoker; Explore the similarities and differences of lung cancer in men and women; Discuss current diagnoses and treatments of lung cancer; Implement system changes in the medical, educational, residential corporate; settings to increase tobacco dependence counseling and treatment; Identify diagnostic and billing codes for the documentation of reimbursement for tobacco dependence reatment; Describe how physicians can incorporate knowledge of tobacco industry marketing practices into their cessation interventions.
